The altar at Emanuel Lutheran Church.

The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated at every worship service. This is in keeping with Luther's own practice and is viewed as essential in re-presenting the message of God's grace for all and reaffirming the community of members with one another as the body of Christ. All are welcome to receive the elements. Grape juice is used in place of wine out of consideration for those for whom alcohol is a problem.

Children are welcome to receive communion at the earliest age their parents wish this to occur. The pastor meets individually with all who are preparing to receive Holy Communion for the first time. In cases of very young children, the sacrament is administered in a way the child can receive it, and instruction is given when the child is able to benefit from it.
